Another First For Independent General Practice

By admin

Issued on behalf of Independent General Practice

Swansea residents are set to benefit from access to the broad range of medical services made available by Wales’ first private GP clinic as the Independent General Practice (IGP) opens the doors to its brand new Swansea surgery.

Following the huge success of its Cardiff practice – which opened in August 2004 and now boasts more than 500 patients – IGP will, from March 19th, be operating daily half day surgeries, at the Sancta Maria Hospital consulting rooms on Ffynone Road.

With three regular doctors – IGP clinical director, Dr Joanna Longstaffe, Dr David Hughes and Dr Jeff Thomas – the clinic will offer twenty minute GP consultations as standard, as well as access to a range of both medical and aesthetic treatments.

These will include both the single MMR vaccine – four are actually booked in for the very first clinic – travel and flu vaccines, access to occupational health services, a variety of anti-ageing and aesthetic procedures, as well as minor surgery, such as mole removal.

With more than 3000 cases of cervical cancer now diagnosed in the UK every year, resulting in over 1000 deaths, IGP has also confirmed that it is to stock Gardasil – the first vaccine to be licensed and launched specifically to target Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) – the virus thought to be one of the major causes of cervical cancer.

Hailed as a massive breakthrough in cancer treatment, Gardasil offers 100% protection against the 2 main strains of HPV that trigger most cases of the disease, as well as protection against 2 other strains of the sexually transmitted virus that cause different infections and will be available to female patients from Monday.

Speaking about this latest venture, IGP clinical director, Dr Joanna Longstaffe, said:

“Our first clinic has experienced rapid growth since we opened and we’re very much looking to replicate the model here at Sancta Maria – providing patients in the Swansea area with access to the first class treatment afforded by our private doctors.

“Judging by the enquiries we’ve had and appointments already confirmed, there is clearly a demand for the service, and we are very much looking forward to welcoming new patients.”

Appointments can currently be made by calling 029 2064 7308. For further information, please visit www.theigp.co.uk.”
