Wales Values Family More Than Rest Of UK

By admin

Issued on behalf of The National Lottery

The National Lottery® has today published a major report into the dreams and aspirations of the nation, revealing that people in

Wales value their family and relationships above everything else.

The National Lottery Dream Study is the first comprehensive research of its kind into the longer-term, deeper and more enduring hopes of the nation. Conducted by London School of Economics, the study combines a survey of 1,500 people with over 250 face-to-face interviews in 12 major

UK cities.

The National Lottery Dream Study discovered that the Welsh would be the most likely to give away their winnings if they hit the jackpot, with 40% of respondents saying that they would give money to friends and family. This compares to just 23% of Londoners, who said they would instead use the money to pay off their own debts – 43%.

When researchers collated the dreams of the nation into ‘types’, relationships came top in Wales, with 41% of Welsh dreamers falling into that category, compared to only 7% of those questioned in Northern Ireland. Welsh Lotto winner Bob Bradley typified this trend when he scooped £3.5 million on his 83rd birthday in March 2006. Following the win, Bob gave all the money away to his family, saying at the time: “Money isn’t important to me. I just want to be around my family to see them enjoy it.”

The survey also found that a very low value was placed on careers in

Wales . Only 1% of Welsh dreamers fell into that category, compared to 4% of respondents in

London .

Don Slater, Reader of Sociology at London School of Economics, who led the research, said: “Caring and charitable

Britain is alive and well. The majority of the nation’s dreams are generous, not selfish, and realistic, not ridiculous. Dreams are above all not greedy or even individualistic – overwhelmingly they concern family, relationships, freedom from stress, the possibility of a meaningful life and a concern for health and happiness.”
