Issued on behalf of Park Plaza, Cardiff

THE 100,000th visitor has booked into the AA Hotel of the Year in Wales – just 27 months after it opened for business.

Businessman Joachim Pelka booked into the Park Plaza Cardiff last week and was presented with a bottle of champagne for helping to mark a major milestone in the hotel’s short history.

The 129-bedroom four-star hotel in the heart of the Welsh capital opened in February 2005 and within 18 months was awarded the prestigious AA Hotel of the Year in Wales status.

Its award-winning Laguna Restaurant & Bar was also granted an AA Rosette in the 2006-07 AA awards for the standard of its food..

Mr Pelka, from Germany, was in Wales for a business visit to the Bosch plant, near Llantrisant, and stayed at the Park Plaza for a week.

Park Plaza sales and marketing director Caroline Sims said: “We are all very proud of what has been achieved at the hotel in such a short space of time.

“But we have built a reputation around customer service and pride ourselves on the number of visitors who return to stay with us.”

Since its opening, the Park Plaza has served up around 10,000 lamb shank dishes in its restaurant, poured an estimated 50,000 glasses of champagne, shaken 10,000 cocktails in the bar and gone through 100,000 miles of loo paper.

General manager Hugh Hilary, who has managed hotels throughout the UK and abroad, including Paris, Spain and New York, has a team of more than 100 staff at the hotel in Greyfriars Road.

He said: “I am very fortunate in having such a wonderful group of people working with me. They are a very hard working, loyal and dedicated team who are extremely good at what they do best – and that is looking after the needs and wants of our guests.”
