A Whole ‘Lotto’ to Celebrate

By admin

Issued on behalf of the National Lottery

An exclusive gathering of some of the biggest Welsh lottery winners was held today (21 May 2007) to celebrate the news that there are now over 130 National Lottery millionaires in Wales

Across The National Lottery’s range of draw-based games and Scratchcards, a massive 250 jackpot prizes have been paid out in Wales – including these 130 millionaires or multi-millionaires. While in total, a staggering £560,787,291 has been paid out in major prizes. Since The National Lottery® launched in November 1994, Wales has had its fair share of memorable lottery winners, many of whom attended today’s celebrations at the Vale Hotel, Golf and Spa Resort in the Vale of Glamorgan.

A National Lottery spokesperson said: “We’re delighted to be bringing together so much good fortune under one roof. We were keen to let lottery players in Wales know just how many people had hit the jackpot and remind them that luck could be just around the corner for them too. Fingers crossed that we create another Welsh millionaire in Wednesday’s Lotto draw!”

Present at today’s gathering were winners from the Welsh lucky hotspot ‘Golden Gwent’. They included two of Wales’ latest Lotto millionaires: Jenny Southall from Newport, who scooped an £8,372,751 jackpot on Saturday 7 April and has already started house hunting for her dream home; and Joanne Gilbert from Abertillery, who won £1,146,747 on 31 April 2007 and is planning a dream holiday to Disneyland.

They were joined at today’s event by Pat and Roger Griffiths, who won £8,485,162 on 17 January 2004. Pat famously immediately resigned from her job as editor of the Abergavenny Chronicle after she won and now spends her time helping to run the family’s 148-acre farm.

Best friends and former miners, John Ackerman and John Stinchcombe, were also celebrating with their partners. Even though they jointly scooped a Lotto prize of £11,544,846 on Wednesday 2 August 2006, both couples have chosen to stay in the same homes in Crumlin.

So just what kind of lifestyle awaits the next member – or members – of the UK’s exclusive club of lottery millionaires? The latest Ipsos MORI1 research into the lives of the UK’s lottery millionaires provides a rare glimpse into what they buy, where they live, and what they do with the money – as well as uncovering how they picked those lucky numbers in the first place.

The survey results show the positive effect a big win can have in making winners feel younger (22%), lose weight (19%), and feel as happy or happier (96%) than before they hit the jackpot. The study also revealed that houses, cars and caravans still top the list of lottery winners’ top 10 purchases, the USA and Dubai have leapt above Spain as their favourite holiday destinations and BMW, Land Rover/Range Rover and Mercedes are the millionaires’ motors of choice.

It is not just the winners themselves who reap the benefits of a lottery win, however, as the overnight millionaires also give money to family (99%), to friends (76%) and to charity (91%). In fact, 17% of National Lottery millionaires have paid off five or more mortgages and 15% have created at least one other millionaire, with an estimated 880 additional millionaires being created within the last 12 years through winners’ generosity.
