Cardiff Firm Stills Behind Eco-Friendly Revolution

Issued on behalf of Stills

A revolutionary new way of buying milk that will help the environment is being piloted in the UK with the help of Cardiff-based design company Stills.

Forget polybottles and cartons – it’s “eco paks” that shoppers will soon be taking their milk home in.

The strong film pouches containing Welsh Calon Wen organic milk go on sale in Waitrose supermarkets from June 25th alongside reusable milk jugs that fit into any fridge door. They hold one eco pak at a time which are then easily replaced when needed.

Designs for the eco paks, the dispensing boxes they stand in on supermarket shelves and the boxes of jugs alongside them in the Waitrose supermarket aisles all come from Stills, of Riverside, Cardiff.

The company’s creative director, David Lea, said: “Our aim was to create a brand that linked the organic milk product directly with the farm with values of care for environment, natural purity and healthy country living.

“And we wanted shoppers to be left in no doubt that Calon Wen is a cared for product that comes from local organic farms in the Welsh countryside, from West Wales to Snowdonia.”

Using 75% less plastic packaging than a polybottle of the same volume, the eco paks and jugs will be particularly attractive to the growing numbers of environmentally-conscious shoppers. If the eco pak-milk jug system was so successful as to replace polybottles entirely, nearly 100,000 tonnes of plastic would be saved every year in the UK.

The jug, along with eco packs of skimmed, semi-skimmed and whole milk will be available in three Waitrose branches in Wales, a further 17 in London and one Bath. If successful, it could be rolled out throughout the supermarket chain.
