Highlighting the Key to Success

Issued on behalf of Ideal Business Show Wales

Speakers at the Ideal Business Show Wales

There is often a fine line between success and failure as speakers in the Innovation Theatre on the second day of the Ideal Business Show Wales will demonstrate.

Gerald Ratner, former chief executive of the jewellery chain Ratners, achieved notoriety after when he described some of his stock as “total crap” – a comment that led to the company going bankrupt.

But it is often forgotten that Ratner was one of the country’s most successful businessmen who’d taken over the family firm with 130 stores in 1984 and grown it to 2,500 stores and 25,000 employees with annual sales of £1.2 billion and profits of £121 million six years later.

He will share his experiences with visitors to the Ideal Business Show Wales at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff at the Business Lunch at 1pm on Thursday June 14.

Bankruptcy is something another speaker Mike Southon is familiar with. The entrepreneur was involved in 17 start-ups in the 1990s, “…three of which went broke and two of which went public,” he says.

He once said, “Business is simple. You should be able to get all you need to succeed on the back of a beermat.” Four best-selling books later, he is known as The Beermat Entrepreneur and he will be speaking at the Business Breakfast at 9am on Thursday June 14th.

Success is something very familiar to Henry Engelhardt – former hamburger salesman, journalist, film-maker, Stock Exchange runner, marketing manager and managing director.

Now one of the best-known figures in the Welsh business scene as creator and chief executive of Admiral, he’ll be speaking at 11am on Thursday June 14th.

The closing keynote speaker is John Blaskey – a guru in the live marketing world. With more than 30 years experience in exhibitions, John describes live marketing as “the nearest thing to showbiz!”

He is famous for his “3-30-120” maxim; “You have three seconds to break the ice and grab the attention, 30 seconds to qualify whether the person you’re talking to is any good to you, and 120 seconds to pitch to them,” he says:

And his message to visitors will be about making an impact and getting remembered. Catch him at 3.30pm in the Innovation Theatre.
