SWANSEA COUNCIL INVESTS IN INNOVATIVE TRAINING SCHEME

MANAGERS at Swansea Council are to be assessed by their colleagues as part of an innovative development programme in the coming months.

The council is working with Blue Apple HR Solutions to undertake a major project in developing managers’ skills over the next two years.

The two-day programme will identify managers’ own developmental needs and assist them in forming a personal development plan. These ‘management development centres’ will be based on the feedback from ‘360-degree’ appraisals – an approach that aims to create a more valid and open appraisal process.

360-degree analysis can provide insight into how different groups in an organisation see a manager as a person. Participants will complete a self-assessment report, which is then compared with the feedback received from the participant’s own manager, their peers and the people who report to them directly. This information will be collated into a comprehensive report, and participants will receive individual feedback and discussion about their performance.

Mark Tuson, Head of Organisational Development at Swansea Council, said: “This is a voluntary activity for any manager who wants to improve their skills and is interested in their future development. We have made a commitment to raising the quality of our staff, and we felt that this particular programme offered by Blue Apple would be an extremely useful exercise.

“With 13,500 people working for Swansea Council, and managers working in areas as varied as social services and waste management, it is not an overnight task, but we expect some clear and specific needs to come out of this, which we hope to address immediately.”

Sally Pexton, HR Consultant at Blue Apple HR Solutions said: “Swansea Council has shown its commitment to best practice and by undertaking this process Swansea Council is identifying itself as a provider of progressive staff training.”
