Congratulations to Xtreme Everest from Multimat

By admin

Issued on behalf of Beacon Products Ltd

When an expedition of climbers, scientists and medics set up laboratories on Mount Everest earlier this year they sacrificed comfort for the sake of their research.

But after 11 weeks at high altitude including two summit ascents, the Caudwell Xtreme Everest expedition has been declared a great success and the teams’ stay on top of the world was made that bit more bearable by Multimat, the leading brand of foam and self-inflating mats from Beacons Products Ltd.

The company provided 71 self-inflating and foam integrated sleeping systems to the expedition members to ensure they’d stay warm and comfortable and get the best night’s sleep possible as temperatures fell as low as -40c.

Xtreme Everest took researchers to camps at various altitudes where they studied more than 200 volunteers. They set up laboratories at Base Camp (5300m) and the Western Cwm (6200m), did more experiments on the South Col (7900m) and the climbing teams even took measurements on the summit (8850m) itself which they successfully reached in late May.

The researchers were studying the impact high altitude has on oxygen levels in the blood. The team – many of them intensive care doctors and nurses – believe learning how the human body behaves at altitude in low levels of oxygen will help them care for critically ill patients who also have low oxygen levels in their blood.

Though research results may take months to evaluate, Xtreme Everest appears to have been a great success and Beacons Products’ managing director Adrian Stammers, who himself climbed Everest in last years infamous West Ridge attempt, was keen to congratulate them: “They deserve a huge pat on the back – not only for successfully meeting the challenge but also for the potentially invaluable research they’ve done in such harsh conditions over a sustained period.

“It’s not just climbers that will be grateful for their work but ordinary people who are suffering from critical illnesses will benefit too. So we’re very proud of the role that Multimats have played in helping them to this great achievement.”

The Base Camp team opted for 50 integrated ice mat systems from the Advance Camp range.

The 1980 x 660 x 100mm self inflating Ice Mat 100s (CMSI-AC100XXL) weighed 1990g with a tog value of 9.5 and with two super fast valves. An additional fleece mat cover, weighing 850g, added another 1.9 tog of warmth.

The cross-linked Closed Cell Foam Ice Mat 18s (CM-AC018XXL) acted as underlayers protecting the Ice Mat 100s and boosting the thermal value to exceed 15 tog.
The summit team opted for 21 integrated summit systems from the ‘Unsupported Expedition Range’.

To reduce the self inflating weight, the self-inflating Summit 25/38s (CMSI-EU025/38L) had a tapered thickness profile from 38mm at the torso to 25mm at the legs. This 1830 x 510mm mat provided 7.8 tog and a specific torso core “Warm Zone” where it was most needed. The 25/38’s super fast inflation/deflation valve was also invaluable and the fleece-lined sacks acted as pillowcases and weighed in at 815g.

The team also chose cross-linked, Closed Cell Foam Summit Mats (CM-EU012XL) which protected the Summit 25/38 from punctures and added a further tog value of 3 and weighed only 355g.
