Lay Claim To £5,000 Give Me Five Award

Issued on behalf of the Principality Building Society
A BID to cut down on anti-social behaviour among the young in a Mid Wales village is seeking help from a special community treasure chest this summer.
The Shawbury Action Group in Shrewsbury is one of the latest community organisations to apply for the £5,000 Shropshire Star-Principality Give Me Five award.
The group is aiming to provide play and recreational facilities for young people aged from three to 18 on the village green in Shawbury.
Plans have been drawn up for the play area, with the group looking to raise up to £100,000 to fund the project.
Action group spokeswoman Karen Compton said: “We have been experiencing problems with anti-social behaviour in the community, with intimidation of older people, youngsters hanging around on street corners and incidents of vandalism.
“Basically, these young people are bored because there’s precious little for them to do in the village at the moment – and we want to rectify that.
“Our aim is to build a play park that will cater for youngsters of all ages, with equipment ranging from swings and slides to a kickwall and basketball hoops.
“There were play facilities on the village green years ago, and we’re planning to give that area back to the young so they have something to do and, therefore, reduce the anti-social behaviour.”
The group is one of the latest organisations to apply for the £5,000 Shropshire Star-Principality Give Me Five award being offered to community groups and charities this summer.
Designed to help community organisations and charities make a real difference to the communities they serve, the Give Me Five campaign aims to give groups the chance to kick-start, complete or continue the good work of a worthwhile project close to the needs of its community.
The £5,000 award for the region covered by the Star is one of five similar awards being given away this summer across Wales and the Borders by Principality Building Society to mark Principality’s achievement in reaching the significant milestone of £5 billion in assets.
Principality chief executive Peter Griffiths said: “We have been delighted with the number and quality of the applications received for the Give Me Five award from community groups and charities across the Shropshire Star area. But there is still time for other groups to make their claim on the money and we would encourage as many as possible to do so.
“The Shropshire Star-Principality Give Me Five £5,000 award will be given to a clearly-defined project which is making – or will make – a difference to the people within its community. It needs to be full of life, close to the community it serves, meets a defined need and is innovative.”
If you are involved in a project – or you benefit from or just know of one – that could do with a £5,000 injection of support to make a big difference to your community, then apply today for the Shropshire Star-Principality Give Me Five award.
