Curves in the Right Places for Charity Walk

Issued on behalf of Cancer Research Wales
A curvy team of fitness fanatics from Newport are getting ready to turn the air pink and blue, to help in the fight against cancer this Sunday (September 9).
Staff and members of the female fitness club Curves, on the Leeway Industrial Estate in Newport, have signed for the Cancer Research Wales Pink and Blue walk – a four mile route around Cardiff Bay aiming to raise vital funds for research into breast and prostate cancer.
The Curves team, which already has signed up more than 30 of their new members to join in the walk, only opened its doors just over a month ago, yet is already having an impact on its members’ fitness.
Laura Phillips, who co-owns Curves in Newport with partner Rhys, said: “The idea behind the Pink and Blue Walk is something that’s very close to the hearts of the Curves team. We have only been open a matter of weeks, but already we are attracting a lot of members who are keen to take part in the walk for Cancer Research Wales.
“Not only does the walk support a very good cause, it also promotes fitness and fun which is central to the message that we promote at Curves.”
Everyone signed up for the walk, which takes in sights including the Norwegian Church and the Welsh Assembly building, has been asked to wear either pink, to represent the research into breast cancer, or blue to show support of prostate cancer research – two of the most common cancers affecting people in Wales.
Liz Andrews, Deputy Charity Director for Fundraising at Cardiff -based Cancer Research Wales said; “Around 20,000 men and women will be diagnosed with prostate or breast cancer in Wales every year. We need to raise a million pounds to fund a Welsh-based research project into anti-cancer drugs to fight both terrible illnesses.
“These drugs could potentially stop breast and prostate tumours spreading into other parts of the body, saving the lives of many people in Wales.”
Registration for the walk is £5 per person. For further details please contact Cancer Research Wales on Cardiff 02920 316976.
