Superwoman Charity Seminar Back for the Third Year
By admin
Issued on behalf of Darwin Gray Solicitors
Superwoman is back. The charity networking evening for business women will run again in Cardiff this autumn for the third year in succession.
Once again, the event combines a seminar with key speakers followed by a networking opportunity over drinks.
Superwoman organiser Bethan Darwin, of Darwin Gray Solicitors, said, “All working women nowadays are Superwomen, juggling work, family commitments and, hopefully at least, a social life as well. The Superwoman seminar gives us Superwomen of Wales the chance to get together and share our stories of how we just about manage to pull it all off and iron our capes too.
“And, of course, as well as a bit of fun and helping each other, Superwoman III will give us the chance to raise some valuable money for two charities very close to our hearts.”
Speakers at Superwoman III include discrimination law specialist Eleanor Williams, journalist Carolyn Hitt, and leading business figures Liz Connolly and Enid Thomas.
Darwin Gray solicitor Eleanor Williams suffered a cerebral haemorrhage when just 16 but fought back to become one of Wales’ best known discrimination law specialists. Her talk Defying disability, will focus not only on her personal battle to overcome disability but also the issues that disability poses for businesses and how they can be overcome and also her recent role as equality officer for the Celtic Crusaders Rugby League team.
TV and Radio Producer and Western Mail Columnist Carolyn Hitt was the BT Welsh Sports Journalist of the Year 2001/2 and BT UK Sports Journalist of the Year 2001/2. In Just a load of balls, she will talk about the challenges of getting the macho world of Welsh rugby culture in touch with its feminine side and why “female support” doesn’t necessarily mean a Berlei Sports Bra …
Liz Connolly knows exactly what it’s like to be a woman in a man’s world having been operations director at McNiff Civil Engineering. She decided on a change of career and completed her CIPD qualification just before giving birth t her fourth child. She is now HR Manager for Allied Bakeries which requires extensive travelling away from home.
In Bread and Roses, she will tell us a little about what it takes to give us each day our daily bread without ending up as toast and how she manages to carve out just a little time each day to smell the roses.
Enid Thomas chaired the National Council for Education and Training in Wales, was Chief Executive of the North West Wales Training and Enterprise Council and Managing Director of the Welsh Development Agency in North Wales. Having ticked almost every box in the public sector she made the brave decision seven years ago to review her way of working.
She is now the Director of a successful management consultancy, with a portfolio of non executive positions and projects across a number of organisations. Enid’s talk, Changing Places – how did she do it? will focus on managing this difficult transition, changing roles, being wise to the stumbling blocks, and weathering the inevitable storms to achieve real work life balance.
The evening, on October 17 is sponsored by Kilsby & Williams Chartered Accountants and Marble Recruitment. Registration is at 5.30pm and the evening will likely to draw to a close at around 8.30pm following a drinks reception. The Park House Club is donating the rooms for the event with Elevator designing the flyer and Hartley Wilprint printing it – all for free.
The cost of the evening is £30 per person and every penny raised by the event will go directly to Superwoman’s two adopted charities. These are Valleys Kids (www.valleyskids.org), a charity working with disadvantaged children and families in the South Wales Valleys, and Barnardo’s Cymru (www.barnardos.org.uk). Cheques should be sent to Darwin Gray but made out to either Valleys Kids or Barnardo’s.
Delegates will be given a goody bag at the end of the evening for which the organisers are very grateful to the following for their donations: Browns Office Supplies, Darwin Gray, The Independent General Practice, The Serious Food Company, Blue Sky Ideals Ltd, Vanity Avenue Ltd, WM Magazine, Copthorne Hotel, Compass Coaching, Inspiration Wealth Management, Optical Alliance Ltd, Central Pharmacy, Envirowise, Kamigata, EJ Catering and Smart Move.
