Issued on behalf of The Lord’s Taverners
CHILDREN from Pontarddulais were bowled over when a Welsh cricketing charity presented them with a new bus.
The children, who are all pupils at the new specialist teaching facility (STF) at Pontarddulais Comprehensive School were presented with a top-of the range, specially adapted minibus by The Lord’s Taverners Wales Region at the Glamorganshire Golf Club in Penarth, near Cardiff.
The Lord’s Taverners charity pledges to ‘give children with special needs a sporting chance’ by providing funding and equipment for sports and activities.
The new Lord’s Taverners bus is worth more than £35,000. The bus includes a wheelchair lift and wide isles, to ensure that those at the STF who use wheelchairs have full access.
STF coordinator Julie Gibbs said: “Thanks to the Lord’s Taverners, we can now have access to the wider community that would not otherwise have been available. We have already been able to use the bus for weekly hydrotherapy and swimming sessions, as well as a visit to Penclacwydd wetlands.
“It’s not just the places we visit that are valuable, it’s also the interaction with the community that take place during visits out of school. The pupils extend their learning experience, and hopefully it also opens other people’s eyes to the potential of our young people and what they can offer society. Without such a wonderful donation, this would not always have been possible.”
Ray Dyer, chairman of the Lord’s Taverners Wales Region said: “It was fantastic to meet some of the children and staff from Pontarddulais School, to see the bus in action, and hear how much the pupils enjoy their visits out of school.”
The Lord’s Taverners are holding a fundraising Christmas Lunch on November 23 at the Swansea Marriott, where guests will be treated to a sumptuous menu and after-dinner entertainment.
