Beauty is only skin deep or so the saying goes, but looking good and feeling good often go hand in hand to the point where unhappiness with physical appearance can have a profound effect on general wellbeing. Poor health can also reflect in our appearance.

Maintaining general good health is, of course, the most important thing, however, an approach to health that includes looking after the outside as well as the inside can reap great benefits.

This is why at the Independent General Practice we have since 2004, provided an extensive range of aesthetic treatments that complement and work alongside our personalised medical services, with experienced doctors always on hand to provide detailed consultation and advice.

Our aesthetic treatments range from those aimed specifically at delaying the signs of ageing – for example, the removal of wrinkles and frown and laughter lines; face and hand skin rejuvenation etc – to the treatment of deep scars and blemishes, as well as lip, cheek and chin shaping. Only doctors carry out these procedures – we do not delegate this work to junior staff, a practice that is unfortunately the norm in many practices.

Dr Hughes is a specialist in dermatology with many years experience in minor surgical procedures including the removal of moles, cysts and warts using local anaesthetic.

There are now so many ‘clinics’ set up that carry out aesthetic work and even franchised plastic surgery, that it is reassuring to know that it is still possible to get an unbiased, but sympathetic and informed medical opinion – and help with referral to the most experienced surgeon in a particular field and, also, that the medical expert (doctor) advising in the consultation has no vested interest in encouraging surgery.

The increased interest in remaining healthy, living longer and looking good has resulted in a new faculty of medicine emerging that focuses on extending youthfulness to attitude as well as appearance. Its consultants are experts in the science of “anti-ageing”. Very simply, this starts with assessing diet, lifestyle, mental wellbeing, exercise, hormone status and replacement. Finally, it focuses on appropriate beneficial aesthetic treatments.

‘Now’ is always a great time to prioritise your health and “wellness” assessments are an excellent place to start. These provide an indication of your health on any particular day and highlight any potential major future risk factors. The IGP will also combine anti-ageing advice with this assessment – and lend its medical expertise and continuity of care to keeping you feeling great and looking your best.
