South Wales Echo Give Me Five Shortlist

By admin

Issued on behalf of the Principality Building Society

THREE special community projects have been shortlisted for the £5,000 South Wales Echo-Principality Give Me Five award.

They were among more than 50 projects from all over South Wales put forward for the cash award offered up by Wales’ largest building society.

The three shortlisted by the Principality judging panel are the St John’s Parish Church renovation scheme in Cardiff city centre, the Cynon Best Community Arts programme in Aberdare, and a unique children’s project run from the Techniquest centre in Cardiff Bay.

The St John’s Parish Church scheme is to support the planned building enhancement work at the historic church and to help finance improved interpretation facilities for visitors and the hospitality team.

The Cynon Best Community Arts application for the award is being supported by Roy Noble of BBC Radio Wales, with the money used to help fund workshops creating art from recycled materials which, in turn, helps to fund the Home for Art in Aberdare.

If the Techniquest Give Me Five application is successful it will fund a Communities First project for Cardiff and The Valleys designed to benefit children aged seven to 11, providing a cost-effective way for disadvantaged children to be engaged in science, technology, engineering and maths.

The shortlisted three were among more than 150 applications received from all over Wales as part of a £25,000 Give Me Five giveaway to community organisations and charities in five separate regions to help celebrate Principality’s achievement in reaching the milestone of more than £5 billion in assets.

Designed to help community projects and charities make a real difference to the communities they serve, the Give Me Five treasure chest was offered by Principality to give groups the chance to kick-start, complete or continue the good work of a worthwhile project close to the needs of its community.

The three shortlisted for the Echo-Principality Give Me Five Award will now be considered by the judging panel, with the final winner of the £5,000 award announced by the end of November.

Principality chief executive Peter Griffiths said: The sheer volume and quality of applications we received is testament to the success of the South Wales Echo-Principality Give Me Five award.

“It proved difficult enough to narrow down the entries to the three we have now shortlisted. We now have the unenviable job of having to decide between those three for the final winner who will receive the £5,000 award.”
