Students Log On For Charity
Issued on behalf of the Military Preparation College, Cardiff
Students from Wrexham’s Military Preparation College (MPC) took to the road with a rather heavy load in order to raise money for Help A Hero – the charity that helps to provide practical support for wounded servicemen and women and their families.
Fifteen teenagers completed a 13.1 mile relay run from Ponderosa Horse Shoe Pass in Wrexham to their base at the High Town Barracks -carrying with them a 15kg log and raising much needed funds for the charity which is backed by celebrities including David Beckham and Sharon Osbourne, who have given support to its work to help those risking their lives every day to fight for their country.
Taking turns to carry the log along the difficult track, the team of 10 boys and 5 girls – aged 16-18 – completed the half marathon in 3hours and 42minutes, knocking an impressive 45 minutes off their predicted time.
They managed to raise over £500 from the grueling task, which put in to practice many of the physical and mental training techniques featured on the Military Preparation College curriculum.
Wrexham MPC instructor, Paul Evans, said he was delighted by the effort shown by all the students involved:
“The 15 students who took part in the run should be extremely proud of what they achieved. The course was always going to be hard, but the freezing temperatures meant that it was even more difficult than expected.
“The fact that the group all made it to the finish line together and in an excellent time really pays tribute to their hard work and commitment to raise money to help such a deserving charity.
“Charity work is a real focus of the work we do at the college so I’d just like to congratulate them all as we look forward to the next event.”
