Stradform wins top construction award

Leading Welsh construction company, Stradform Ltd, is celebrating its achievement, having been recognised with a prestigious industry award.
The company was honoured in the innovation category of this year’s Constructing Excellence in Wales (CEW) Awards, beating off stiff competition to win the category and earn a place at the national final, which will take place in London in November.
The award was in recognition of the innovative approach taken to the £17 million contract Stradform is currently undertaking on behalf of the South Wales Police Authority – the construction of a new Divisional Police Headquarters in Cardiff Bay, on the site of the former police station.
The project is the highest in value that Stradform has ever been awarded and also the largest capital project to be commissioned by South Wales Police. On completion, the custody suite, comprising 60 cells and associated facilities, such as interview rooms, will be one of the largest in the county. Additional internal features include a high tech command room and welfare facilities for police staff.
The CEW Innovation Award highlights innovation in finding technical or environmental solutions to overcome problems within a specific project and, according to Milica Kitson, Chief Executive of CEW, Stradform was very worthy of the accolade.
“Stradform adopted a highly innovative method of decontaminating a heavily polluted site through the use of High Vacuum Extraction (HVE) – a system rarely applied to construction operations. This enabled construction work to commence while remediation was being undertaken and also avoided the need to excavate the entire site and transport to landfill.
“In addition, the team also proposed an innovative solar lighting system that has never been used before, and allows the required levels of natural daylight into the cells via a series of ducts in the atrium roof that capture it and transfer through solar tubes and light boxes.
“All in all, we were extremely impressed by the unique approach the company has taken to this challenging project and wish them all the very best at the national final later this year.”
Commenting on behalf of Stradform, Managing Director, John Worrall said:
“Stradform is committed to sustainable construction and the team has liaised with a number of experts in order to ensure that the most effective and innovative solutions have been found at every level.
“As a company, it is a great achievement to have been awarded the Constructing Excellence in Wales Award for Innovation and we are looking forward to taking the new Police Headquarters through to the national finals in November.”
