Wales miss out on Victory Shield win

By admin

The Welsh Development Squad’s campaign in this year’s Victory Shield tournament has kicked off its first match in the three nation competition, narrowly missing out on a draw with Scotland.

The match, which saw the two sides battle it out at Broadwood Stadium, North Lanarkshire in Scotland, ended 2-1 to Scotland.

The annual Victory Shield, sponsored by Sky Sports, takes place between the Under-16 sides of Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland.

The Under 16 team are trained under the wing of the Welsh Football Trust which represents the young talent that has been identified and developed from the Trust’s grassroots development programmes.

A large proportion of the Under 21 squad that faced England in last week’s European qualifiers were brought through the Welsh Development Trust’s player development squads.

Manager and Welsh Football Trust Technical Director Osian Roberts said: “Although Wales were narrowly defeated, the work of the development squad is to develop our young players and to help them build on the talent that they have in readiness to compete on an International level.

“The Victory Shield campaign has got off to a very competitive and promising start with many of the boys’ performances proving to be extremely positive.

“We will now all look forward to the second game of the tournament against the current Victory Shield champions England, which is certain to be a very tough and demanding game for everyone involved.”

Wales will face the current Victory Shield champions England at Stebonheath Park in Llanelli on Friday 31 October.
