There’s plenty to celebrate

Construction company Stradform (part of VINCI PLC) won the Constructing Excellence in Wales (CEW) award for innovation for its approach to building the new Police Headquarters in Cardiff Bay. Stradform has also received recognition for its commitment to sound environmental practice and sustainability with a prestigious Green Apple Award.
IT company BSS celebrated 25 years in business in the same month as winning the coveted Microsoft Gold Certified Partner status. The Swansea-based business offers IT support, web development and bespoke software development and has a client base that includes fuel giants Chevron, charity Bobath Cymru and Corona Energy.
Cancer-researchers and rugby stars took to the catwalk in Cardiff in a fashion show to raise money for Cancer Research Wales. From the glamour of the catwalk at Holland House, Cardiff, fundraisers also turned their attention to the movies, and hosted a gala screening of the latest James Bond film, Quantum of Solace, and the Welsh premiere of Baz Luhrmann’s film Australia. The three events between them raised thousands of pounds to help fund pioneering research in Wales.
Record crowds descended on Cowbridge in October for the town’s fifth Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival. The event is now established as a key event in the gastronomic calendar, with visitors and exhibitors alike coming from far and wide and produce ranging from organic Vale venison to Mediterranean olives.
Cardiff’s Marriott Hotel celebrated the official opening of its newly refurbished restaurant, bar and leisure club to great acclaim in the local media. The new restaurant, Brasserie Centrale, boasts seating for 130 diners in four dining areas and the French-themed menu also features local influences, under the control of new head chef Tino Pardon. Leading journalists and food critics were among the first to sample the fare and duly responded with excellent reviews.
The Independent General Practice, Wales’ first exclusively private general practice, enjoyed further expansion with the opening of its first clinic outside Wales. With clinics already established in Cardiff, Newport and Swansea and a super surgery at Cardiff Gate, the company opened a new surgery in Edgbaston under clinical director (Birmingham) Dr James Swallow.
A state-of-the-art orthopaedic centre was opened at Spire Cardiff Hospital in December. The Orthopaedic Centre of Excellence is the first of its kind in Wales and will boast some of the top medical staff in the country including 16 renowned orthopaedic surgeons, many with international reputations. A man with a truly international reputation was that of the guest of honour, Joe Calzaghe, whose services were secured to cut the ribbon to open the new centre.
