Jade and the media finally tie the knot
By admin
Jade Goody and the modern-day media were made for each other.
Few people have ever generated the full range of raw and contrasting emotions which sell newspapers and boost ratings.
People often talk about the media putting someone on a pedestal, only to knock them off once they succeed – though in the cases of Angus Deayton and more recently Jonathan Ross I always thought it was totally deserved, and never understood why they were ever given a second chance!
In Jade’s case, it has been a bizarre role reversal from the normal media ‘love-in’.
For years, the former Big Brother star was vilified and hated in equal measure – with her performance on Celebrity Big Brother, and her racist outbursts against fellow housemate Shilpa Shetty, generating some of the most vicious coverage we have seen in recent times – never before had a TV reality show been held up as a microcosm of our whole British society.
Two years later, the world has turned full circle, and there can be no-one who cannot sympathise with her tragic plight, and also, the courageous way in which the woman who was once so despised has put herself in front of the cameras to raise awareness of the importance of smear testing. She did this before the huge groundswell of support for her.
Public relations guru and friend of Jade, Max Clifford, has been orchestrating the media coverage, ensuring that while she is protected from the media circus which is now following her every move, she is also using that media circus to highlight her plight – and it’s a mutually beneficial relationship.
OK! Magazine bought the exclusive rights to her marriage to long-term partner Jack Tweed, and the magazine duly sold out across the country.
The media has its story….but in turn, Jade has used the media.
She used it to climb the greasy pole of celebrity, and she’s using it now to raise awareness of an issue important to all of us.
Whatever you think of the media, the Jade Goody story demonstrates just how important the media is in the world of communication.
