Alison leads the way for women’s football in Wales

Girl’s football in Wales has received a huge boost with the appointment of a regional development co-ordinator for the Welsh Football Trust.
Covering Torfaen, Monmouth, Newport, Gwynedd, Conwy and Anglesey, Alison Mahoney will head up the Girl’s and Women’s Football Programme and create more opportunities for aspiring young female football players.
Alison, who lives in Llantwit Fardre, near Pontypridd, said: “I have always been sports mad since the day I could run! Unfortunately though, when I was at school there just weren’t any opportunities for me to play football, so I took up hockey instead.”
Alison, 34, went on to play hockey at National League level before continuing with her football at college when opportunities became available.
“I think it’s such a shame that there aren’t always the same opportunities for girls as there are for boys even though football is the biggest sport in Wales for girls. This is something the Welsh Football Trust is working hard to change. I love the fact that my job is making a difference.”
Neil Ward, chief executive of the Welsh Football Trust, said: “We are thrilled to have Alison on board. Her previous experience working in sports development roles across the UK, as well as her enthusiasm, will be a huge asset in her new role.”
Alison’s main focus this year will be on the development of new Girls Football Performance Centres across Wales, along with the establishment of a new National Women’s League due to launch in September.
