Marriott help schoolchildren see the ‘fruits’ of their labour

By Effective Communication

A team from Cardiff’s Marriott Hotel packed up their shovels and headed to Penarth to help a group of primary schoolchildren with a special fruit tree planting project.

The youngsters at Ysgol Pen-y-Garth are planting the trees with the aim of creating their very own fruit orchard that in the future will enable pupils to benefit from a supply of fruit during break times.

It also forms part of the school’s commitment to teaching youngsters about the benefits of healthy eating and encouraging them to think about their five portions of fruit and vegetables each day.

Marriott International itself is engaged in a global tree planting project with the aim of benefiting the communities within which its hotels are located across the world.

Speaking about the team’s visit to Pen-y-Garth, Marriott Human Resources Manager, Catherine Moss said:

“As a company we’re very aware of the effect our actions can have on the environment and keen to support any projects that have a positive impact.

“We thought the fruit orchard was a great idea as not only will it be good for the environment – as the trees help to offset carbon emissions, absorb pollution and provide vital habitats for birds and other wildlife – but it’s also a really fun way for the youngsters to learn about growing their own food and the importance of a healthy, balanced diet.

“So far, we’ve planted six trees so we’ll be looking forward to watching them grow and eventually, the first harvest!”

Speaking on behalf of the school, headteacher, Iona Edwards, said:

“As part of this term’s theme, year 5 and 6 pupils are designing and creating a garden for the school and we were delighted when the team from the Marriott offered to lend a hand and help us get the fruit orchard underway.

“The children are very excited about seeing the trees as they grow and it’s been a great way for them to learn a bit more about where their food comes from. It’s also a good way to teach them about sustainability in a way they understand and we’d like to thank the Cardiff Marriott for their time and efforts in helping us.”
