Welsh coaches bid for UEFA A Licence

By Effective Communication

Ex-Cardiff City manager Lennie Lawrence, Wales legend Ian Rush, and former Premiership boss Paul Jewell delivered key messages to a record number of Welsh participants at this year’s UEFA A-licence course.
Organised by the Welsh Football Trust, the two-year course offers coaches and players the chance to learn fundamental aspects of the game in order to progress their coaching career.
The highlight of the recent week-long intensive training session at the University of Glamorgan saw Lawrence, Rush and Jewell stress the importance of leadership and motivation, as well as noting the psychology and demands of the game.
Of the 24 candidates currently undertaking the course, 16 are involved with Welsh football clubs; the most ever for such a course.
Welsh Football Trust Technical Director Osian Roberts: “The candidates worked extremely hard on what was a very intensive eight days. My aim was not to teach them ‘what to’ coach but rather ‘how to’.
“The first year is about them developing their own beliefs and philosophy about the game, and they did extremely well. The course provided them with modules on the four key components which are technical, tactical, physical and mental.
“The fact that we have so many Welsh candidates on this year’s course, is a testament to the nations enthusiasm to the sport.”
The course aims to educate candidates in the technical, tactical, physical and mental requirements of modern football, enabling them to organise coaching sessions in advanced skills, tactics, strategies and systems of play.
For one week each year candidates spend 12 hour days attending lectures and observing and participating in practical sessions on the pitches. For the remaining part of the year, they will complete a theory logbook as well as being assessed on a specific topic in preparation for the second year when they return for a final assessment.
