Gwion runs for Welsh charity in Germany

By Effective Communication

Conwy resident, Gwion Schiavone, is preparing to run the fastest marathon in the world for a charity close to his heart.

On Sunday 20 September, civil engineer student Gwion, 21, will take part in the Berlin Marathon in aid of Cancer Research Wales after his aunt, Elizabeth James died from the disease earlier this year.

Elizabeth – known as Leusa to family – was a teacher at Ysgol Gymraeg Cwmbran until she was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus last October. After being treated at Ysbyty Felindre Leusa lost her battle just two weeks before her 56th birthday in March this year.

Gwion, from Pandy Tudur near Llanrwst, will join more than 40,000 athletes in the 36th marathon to be held in the German capital. He said: “Cancer Research Wales is such a worthwhile cause, and the research they do really does help people affected by this terrible disease. I’m hoping to raise over a thousand pounds.”

This is the first fundraiser Gwion has taken part in, but luckily he’ll have nine of his friends joining him on this marathon challenge.

Liz Andrews, deputy charity director for fundraising said: “I know this will be Gwion’s first marathon, and I’m sure he’ll do brilliantly. Every-one at Cancer Research Wales wishes him the best of luck.

“All money raised will go towards funding vital pioneering research into cancer and its treatments in Wales.”
