It’s all in name! Local school names Llanmoor development

By Effective Communication

When family-run housebuilder, Llanmoor Homes wanted a name for its new Llanharry development, the company decided to look no further than the local school and engaged the help of pupils at Llanhari Primary to suggest something suitable.

The brief was to come up with something that represented the local area and its history and that would work equally well in both Welsh and English.

The school encouraged pupils’ enthusiasm by inviting a local historian in to give them a talk about the area and also some examples of ideas the youngsters could follow.

In a presentation at the school on the last day of term, Year 6 pupil Keira White was named the winner with her suggestion of Gelli Ddaear Goch, which loosely translates into English as Redland Grove.

Keira was inspired by the iron mining history of the area, the process of which literally turns the soil red. Llanharry’s links with iron mining go back as far as Roman times and for a period during the twentieth century it boasted the only iron mine in Wales.

As a thankyou for taking part, Llanmoor presented the school with a cheque for £200 and Keira was delighted to receive £50 in Next vouchers for her efforts.

Initial work on the new development – which will consist of twenty-one 3 & 4-bedroom semi and detached properties is due to start in the next few weeks and Llanmoor director, Tim Grey is expecting much interest in the site, which is situated just off Forest Road.

“We’ve enjoyed a great deal of success in this area, having already built in excess of

300 homes and are confident that this prime location – close to all local amenities, shops, restaurants and the nearby village of Pontyclun – will draw a lot of interest from potential purchasers.

“A footpath will link the site to an adjacent play area and the local authority also has plans to preserve the nearby former quarry as a wildlife and nature reserve.  Good local schools and excellent transportation links add to its appeal.

“We’re delighted to now have a name for the new development and would once again like to thank Llanhari Primary, all the pupils and especially Keira for their efforts.”
