New Bus Gets Pupils On The Move

By Effective Communication

Special pupils have been presented with a new minibus at the Royal Porthcawl Golf Club in Bridgend – thanks to a Welsh sporting charity.

Penllergaer Primary School has ten students with disabilities and their new mode of transport, courtesy of The Lord’s and Lady’s Taverners Wales Region, will provide the children with the mobility to visit nearby attractions and travel to their local hydrotherapy centre.

Corey-Jay Martin, Ethan Daniels, Kirsty Pitson, Seren Owen and Tamzin Jones were joined by their teachers at The Lord’s Taverners Ian Spratling Memorial Golf Day on September 17 to accept their specially-adapted bus.

The bus, worth more than £35,000, was presented to the children by chairman of The Lord’s Taverners Wales region, Ed Meggitt.

Mr Meggitt said: “It was great to meet the children who will reap the benefits of this new bus, thanks to the generosity of everyone who has supported The Lord’s Taverners Wales Region.

“The day itself was wonderful. The Royal Porthcawl Golf Club is one of the best courses in Wales, with great views across the bay.”

The Teacher in Charge at Penllergaer Primary School, Helena Jones, said: “The bus will make all the difference to the children. Since receiving it we have already taken the children to Bristol Zoo, the Botanical Gardens, and horse riding.

“At the moment we have to take the children to a nearby centre for their hydrotherapy sessions about three times a week. We have been fundraising for two years to raise £1million for our own pool to be built at the school, but until we have enough money the Taverners bus is essential for transporting the children to the centre.

“The Lord’s Taverners Wales Region has given the children a very special gift, which we would not have had the finance to afford without their help.”

The Lord’s Taverners charity was set up in 1950 by a group of friends and cricket enthusiasts. They aim to give children, particularly those with special needs, a ‘sporting chance’, by providing sporting equipment, minibuses, grants and donations.

The charity also helps children from disadvantaged backgrounds to get involved in sport.
