Smiles all round at local rugby club

A Cardiff orthodontist has put a smile on a lot of people’s faces by pledging financial support for a local rugby team.
Led by founder, Viren Patel, the Orthodontic Centre in Pontprennau presented a cheque for £2000 which will help Ely-based Glamorgan Wanderers purchase much-needed new equipment and fund their travels to away matches.
The money will be shared between the mini rugby group (aged 6-16), the youth league (aged 16-19) and the development and first team (adults) who all train at the Memorial Ground in Ely. The mini rugby team plays on a Sunday and attracts more than 200 children from the area each week, while the first team is currently playing in the Principality Premiership alongside Cardiff, Swansea and Newport. Their captain, Scott Andrews, also captained the Wales U20 when the team toured Japan earlier this year.
Speaking about his company’s decision to support the team, Viren said:
“I think any club that can get youngsters participating in sport and learning the value of being part of a team from a young age can only be a good thing and to hear that some of the money will be used to continue their development is great.
“The Glamorgan Wanderers are an integral part of the local community but I’m very aware of how difficult it is for clubs to raise the funds they require and am happy to be able to lend support in this way.”
Glamorgan Wanderers sponsorship manager Maurice O’Brien said: “We really appreciate the Orthodontic Centre’s help, especially in these tough economic times.
“Our club is more than just a rugby team; we get all the children’s parents coming along at the weekend, making it a really sociable atmosphere and a great family day out.
“Everyone at the club would just like to extend their thanks to Viren and the team for their much valued support.”
The Glamorgan Wanderes Youth team play Barry RFC on 24th October, followed by Llanrumney on 31st October.
