Cooking up a storm as development gains funding

By admin

Grŵp Gwalia has been given a major boost after receiving funding to create a pioneering community project at Swansea’s old police station.

The not for profit housing provider, has recently opened the doors on Llys Glas – the new development at the old police station on Alexandra Road –  and is now to receive £283, 500 from the Welsh Assembly Government’s Swansea Strategic Regeneration Area Fund to complete the last phase of the exciting social development.

Grŵp Gwalia now plans to complete the redevelopment which currently houses student accommodation alongside artists’ studios, the Celfi Gallery and the Citizens Advice Bureau, with a space for community gatherings including a cafe run by young people from the area.

The social enterprise project will offer young people the chance to manage their own business as part of a community team, while opening up the new space to people from across the city to host activities such as exhibitions, training workshops, conferences and functions.

Michael Williams, Group Chief Executive of Grŵp Gwalia said: “With the help of the Welsh Assembly Government and the Swansea Strategic Regeneration Funding, the exciting young person’s social enterprise will add even more vitality to this development.”

Leighton Andrews, Deputy Minister for Regeneration, said Grŵp Gwalia has created an important community resource and asset at Llys Glas.

“This final phase will support social enterprise and provide young people with hands on experience of business and training opportunities while also providing a useful facility for organisations across Swansea. It’s also good to see sustainable uses found for old buildings like Llys Glas.

“I am pleased the Strategic Regeneration Area programme has been able to provide financial support for this project which complements the range of other activities at the old police station.”
