Event supports cancer research in North Wales

By Effective Communication

A fundraising evening is set to raise hundreds of pounds for a revolutionary cancer research project in Bangor.

Rachael Corry is organising the Ladies Christmas Night at Rhyl Rugby Club to raise money for Cancer Research Wales; the charity which is funding the project.

Rachael, who is no stranger to fundraising having collected more than £10,000 for cancer charities over the years said: “Cancer affects so many people; certainly a lot of my friends and family have been touched by the disease. Fundraising is my way of giving something back.”

All the money raised by Cancer Research Wales goes towards funding vital research into pioneering projects including research into chemotherapy treatment for bowel cancer, research into the spread of breast and prostate tumours, new cervical cancer research, and funding for PhD research students across Wales.

The charity is currently funding a cutting-edge research project at Bangor University which investigates a novel protein variant possibly linked with rapid growth of breast cancer cells.

The research group leader, Dr Thomas Caspari, said: “Although 90% of breast cancers are caused by gene mutations acquired later in life, it is not yet known exactly how these genetic abnormalities are linked with aging and environmental factors.

“Our discovery of this novel protein opens a new window into the origins of cancer helping scientists to unravel why some cells in our body start to grow uncontrollably.

“This work would not have been possible without the generous funding from Cancer Research Wales.”

Elizabeth Andrews, Deputy Charity Director at Cancer Research Wales said: “We’re proud to be sponsoring exciting research projects, such as Dr Caspari’s, across the whole of Wales.

“I’d like to thank Rachael for putting so much effort into organising her ladies night. It’s because of people like her that we can continue to provide vital and pioneering research into cancer and its treatments.”

The Ladies Christmas Night will take place on Saturday November 21 at Rhyl Rugby Club. To book your tickets, contact Rachael on 01824 702966 or 07891772069 or rachaelcorry@hotmail.com.

Prizes for the raffle have been donated by local companies including Abbey Pets, The Skin Shack, Simon Morrell’s Black Belt Centre of Excellence, The Nail Lounge, Synergie, and Deli-t-full.
