Girls’ Football Performance Centre launches in West Wales
By Effective Communication
Hundreds of girls from South Wales have been attending trials at Wales’ first ever Girls’ Football Performance Centre in Swansea.
The centre is part of the Welsh Football Trust’s vision for girls’ football development and has been established to give girls from the West Wales Women’s and Girls’ League and the Pembrokeshire Girls’ League the opportunity to access additional high quality training.
The centre is the first one in Wales and is an essential stepping stone for girls who wish to progress with their football through into Regional Squads and National Squads with the ultimate aim of representing Wales at senior women’s level. Players aged 10-15 will be training in Under 12, Under 14 and Under 16 age groups with a new Under 10 section planned later in the year.
A strong local partnership has been developed to oversee the centre which includes West Wales FA, West Wales Women’s and Girls’ League, Pembrokeshire Girls’ League, Swansea City Football in the Community and the Welsh Football Trust.
Bob Waygood, Secretary of West Wales FA and Vice Chairman on the National Girls’ Football working group said “This centre is a vital step in the pathway for elite girls in West Wales to enter the Regional and National squads, and we are very proud to be a partner in what is the first centre for Wales”.
Performance Centre Director Ian Owen of Swansea City FC said: “We are delighted to be involved in this new venture which will provide girls in the West Wales area with all the support and guidance they need to progress onto international football.”
Girls will be training on a weekly basis at the Elba Sports Complex in Gowerton in addition to their regular training night at their local club. Qualified coaches will work alongside each age group and a goal keeping coach will also be available to develop the next generation of female goal keepers.
As part of the Welsh Football Trust’s Women’s & Girls’ Football Development Strategy, further Girls’ Football Performance Centres will be developed in other areas of Wales to give talented players better opportunities to access the Welsh Football Trust and FAW performance structures.
A launch night to celebrate the achievements of girls selected for the West Wales centre is to be held on Wednesday 11th November, 6.30pm at the Guild Hall in Swansea.
