Hotel staff in training for charity cycle ride to South Wales

Staff at a Cardiff city centre hotel are in training to take part in a 110-mile charity bike ride from Swindon to South Wales.
A team of five from the Cardiff Marriott will join 30 other cyclists from five of their sister hotels this month (MAY), riding in relays to complete the route from the Swindon Marriott to the Swansea Marriott.

Sponsored by family, friends and work colleagues, they will be raising money for the charity Hospitality Action, which provides financial support for people who once worked in the hospitality industry – hotels, restaurants, pubs, bars and clubs – and who have since fallen on hard times.
The Cardiff Marriott cyclists – Leisure Club manager Paul Coleman, 29, from Cyncoed, Cardiff; Leisure Club team member Emily Morris, 23, from Cathays, Cardiff; housekeeping team member Bryan Hart, 39, from Treherbert, Rhondda; front desk receptionist Tom Jenkins, 21, from Cowbridge; and human resources co-ordinator Michael Crow, 23, from Magor – plan to complete the ride in a day.
The event is taking place as part of the UK-wide Hospitality Action Week, in which businesses within the sector get involved in a variety of fundraising activities for the charity.
The cyclists will be setting out from Swindon on Sunday, May 23, aiming to complete the ride in a single day, with each of the Cardiff riders pedalling more than 20 miles.
To show their support for their cycling colleagues, other members of the 150-strong Cardiff Marriott workforce will be taking to the exercise bikes in the hotel’s Leisure Club – sponsored to ride at least five miles in their lunch breaks.
And some of the 750 members of the Leisure Club will also be joining in the fundraising by taking part in their own sponsored ride on the hotel’s exercise bikes.
The Marriott team are not only seeking sponsors to help swell their fundraising, but support in kind from business in the area to ensure the Swindon-Swansea ride goes off smoothly.
Cardiff Marriott sales director Claire Carro said: “Our team is hoping to raise a decent amount for the Hospitality Action charity, helping people in our industry who have fallen on hard times. But the bike ride will also help to build team spirit within the business.
“We are hoping that local business will also help us with the loan of a couple of bikes and some cycling wear and accessories to ensure the riders not only look the part, but complete the 110 miles on time.”
