Kath makes history with A Licence pass
By Effective Communication
Kath Morgan has become the first female coach in Wales to pass the FAW / UEFA ‘A’ Licence course.
Organised by the Welsh Football Trust, the two-year course offers coaches and players the chance to learn fundamental aspects of the game in order to progress their coaching career.
Kath, a teacher at Ysgol Gyfun Garth Olwg in Treforest, Pontypridd, is no stranger to making history and in 2008 became the first woman to gain 50 full international caps for Wales. Having made her debut on the pitch 15 years ago against Republic of Ireland, Kath, 34, has had a busy and varied playing career.
Kath said: “I was first inspired to get into football in primary school when I watched the boys play and wanted to be better than them.
“I’m very proud of my achievements so far and passing the FAW/ UEFA ‘A’ Licence has topped it off.”
Kath currently splits her spare time between coaching the Merthyr under 19 boys and the senior women’s side. With such a dedication to coaching, the FAW/ UEFA ‘A’ Licence was the next natural step.
The course aims to educate candidates in the technical, tactical, physical and mental requirements of modern football, enabling them to organise coaching sessions in advanced skills, tactics, strategies and systems of play.
The first year, which Kath completed in 2008, sees participants developing their own beliefs and philosophy about the game, while the second year they are assessed on a specific topic.
Welsh Football Trust Technical Director Osian Roberts said: “This is great news for both Kath and for women’s football in Wales.
“Kath had a great playing career and has since worked extremely hard to attain her UEFA ‘A’ Licence. I congratulate her, and am quite confident that there are a few other women coming through that will follow in her footsteps.
“The great thing is that Kath has demonstrated what can be achieved, and I’m sure this will encourage many others to emulate her.”
