Key report launched for Carers Week
By Andy Pearson
Aberavon MP Hywel Francis has lent his support to a new report that deals with how carers cope in a crisis.
Launched by housing provider Gwalia Care and Support, the report – Supporting Carers to Care in a Crisis – highlights the concerns and issues that carers face on a regular basis.
Dr Francis attended the launch of the report and spoke on the subject, of which he has firsthand experience.
He said: “This launch brought people together to raise awareness of their experiences and to find ways of responding to the crisis issues experienced by carers.”
The report, written by Gwalia Care and Support research policy officer Rebecca Davies, was launched at Llys Glas, Swansea’s former central police station.
It highlights the experiences of carers for people with learning disabilities in the Carmarthenshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot areas.
Rebecca said: “The event wasn’t just about launching the paper, we wanted to give unpaid carers of people with learning disabilities the opportunity to express their views on crises and how they cope on a day to day basis.
“It also gave people working in social care the opportunity to discuss the findings of the report alongside their own personal experiences.”
Launched during national annual event Carers Week, the innovative report was funded by the Gwalia Housing Trust.
