A former Wales under 16 player, George Higgins, has signed a three year contract to play for Spanish club, UD Almeria.

George recently competed in the Spanish National Championships for his region Murciana, helping his team reach the final before missing out on glory to Catalunia. The Championship runs from November to May and is considered a bench mark to identify the most talented players across Spain at U16 level.

George’s performance throughout the competition generated much interest from clubs in La Liga before Almeria signed him.

International midfielder, George, played in all three Victory Shield games for Wales in 2009, and was presented with his cap by John Toshack during the Wales Under 17 training camp at San Sebastian in Northern Spain.

The former Barry Boys Comprehensive School pupil, and elder brother Jack, were on Cardiff City’s books from the age of ten, before the family moved to Real Murcia in Spain three years ago.

George’s mum, Andria, said: “We are extremely pleased with George’s contract which will provide him with fantastic incentives to progress through the ranks of the club, in both regional (Andalucia) and International selection.

Wales U16 Manager and Welsh Football Trust Technical Director, Osian Roberts, said: “I am delighted that such a move has transpired for George. Following his performances for the Welsh U16 team last year he was offered several scholarships both in Spain and England. He knows the hard work starts in earnest now, but he’s got a terrific attitude and I know he’ll give this opportunity everything he’s got.”
