IOD Wales reacts to export figures
By Andy Pearson
Robert Lloyd Griffiths, director – Wales, of the Institute of Directors, has reacted to news that exports from Wales have dropped.
New figures show that exports dropped by 16.8% to £8.8bn over the last four quarters. There was an exports fall to EU countries at £1.05bn (18.2%) and in exports to non-EU countries at £723m (15.2%).
Overall, however, there has been a 37.2% increase in Welsh exports between 1999 and the latest four quarters at £2.4bn.
Robert Lloyd Griffiths said: “It’s disappointing that exports from Wales have taken such a hit in the tough trading conditions of the past year – but hardly surprising.
“There’s great work being done by businesses all over Wales as they exploit markets across the world, and this will continue.
“Exports have risen markedly in the past decade and, although we continue to live through difficult times, I’m confident that recovery measures announced in Westminster and Cardiff Bay will help us continue to compete with great vigour.”
