Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival named best event at National Tourism Awards

By Effective Communication

The Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival has been named Best Community Event at this year’s National Tourism Awards for Wales.

The festival, which takes place this year on October 30/31st, picked up the award at a glittering ceremony at the Vale Resort. Almost 400 applications were received and 53 organisations made it to the final – competing for 16 awards which were up for grabs. The winners were announced by TV presenter, Sarra Elgan.

Now in its seventh year, The Cowbridge Food Festival has grown from its roots as a small one day event to a two day culinary extravaganza. Last year saw more than 14,000 food lovers descend on the Vale of Glamorgan market town, to sample some of the finest food and drink in Wales.

Event Organiser Polly Wilson said; “The festival committee is absolutely delighted to have won such prestigious award. Despite its growth over the years, the festival has retained the local, community elements which make it such a special and well-loved event. We’re all looking forward to another fantastic weekend of food, drink and family fun this year.”

Heritage Minister, Alun Ffred Jones, said: “With record entries for this year’s awards, the winners of each category can be very proud of their achievement.

Being named the best in Wales is no mean feat. The dedication that these businesses show to quality and redeveloping their product to meet with consumers needs in a difficult economic climate is to be applauded.

“The awards evening demonstrates the importance of Wales’ £4 billion tourism industry to the Welsh economy and the quality of product that we have to offer our visitors. I’d like to offer my congratulations to all of tonight’s winners.”

This year’s Cowbridge Food and Drink Festival promises the usual mix of great local produce and exhibitors, as well as exotic international fare and lively entertainment. Visitors can explore a host of more than 75 exhibitors in the main food hall, as well as enjoying free of charge, live food demonstrations, which include workshops from some of Wales’ best loved chefs.

Young foodies haven’t been forgotten either. Aside from the street entertainers and live musicians who will be patrolling the streets throughout the festival, little visitors can expect plenty of entertainment at the Kid’s Zone, where there will be free face painting, card making, cake decorating and pumpkin carving.

The ever-popular Champagne tent brings some added sparkle to the festival with and fine live music throughout the weekend.

Filco Supermarkets, a family run-business with eight stores across South Wales, will sponsor the Wine and Cheese Marquee, where festival-goers can sample award winning and predominantly Welsh cheese, complemented by fine wines.

Cowbridge’s famous  boutiques will also be holding numerous special events during the festival.
