Principality staff help take the indoor out at Cardiff school

By Effective Communication

Children at Rumney Infants School have been putting their gardening skills to the test to create a unique outdoor learning environment, with some help from staff at their local Principality branch.

The new outdoor classroom, which comes complete with a willow entrance tunnel will form a sustainable sensory garden for the children, where they will be able to enjoy potting plants, sowing seeds and all the fun of the outdoors.

Principality staff members James Enos, Mark Richards, Gareth Hughes, James Kingsbury and Tim Williams visited the school on Friday (19 November) to help the children make a start on landscaping the al fresco education area by planting trees around the site and building the willow entrance tunnel. Thanks to the donation of daffodil bulbs from Blooms garden centre in St Mellons, and two bags of bark, from Homebase on Newport Road, they got off to a flying start.

Headmistress, Ann Evans, said: “The School are very grateful for the help and financial support provided by the members of staff from the Principality who helped create the Outdoor Classroom. This classroom will be used by all pupils from 3 – 11 years. Every member of the Principality staff worked enthusiastically and built very productive working relationships with our pupils. As a consequence we achieved in one day far more than anticipated due to the committed and humorous approach adopted. Our pupils will be able to enjoy the facility for many years.”

The new outdoor classroom will provide the resource for children to develop their natural curiosity, motivation and interest through firsthand experience.

Principality Branch Manager at Rumney, James Enos, said: “We are delighted to be able to support Rumney Infant School on this initiative.

“The garden classroom sounds like a fun and novel way to allow the children to study outdoors during the warmer months. Hopefully being outside will allow them more freedom to improve their studies, as well as providing a great learning context to teach children how to act responsibly towards the environment.”

“Our close relationship with communities such as Rumney ensures that we can continually improve and support local causes across Wales.”
