Capitol shoppers dig deep for Light up a Life Appeal
By Effective Communication
The most recent annual Light up a Life Appeal – organised to raise vital funds for George Thomas Hospice Care – helped to raise over £115,000 for the charity, which provides free specialist palliative care for those suffering with cancer and other life-threatening illnesses, as well as their families.

Held each year across the Christmas period, the appeal encourages supporters to sponsor a light on its huge Christmas tree – which was this year housed in Cardiff’s Capitol Shopping Centre – either in memory of a loved one who has sadly passed away or in honour of somebody special
Generous visitors to the Capitol Centre through November and December were among those who helped contribute to a grand total of £66,735. As in previous years, this was once again generously match funded by the Jane Hodge Foundation – to the tune of £50,000 – to take the final total to £116,735, close to £20,000 above what was anticipated for the 2010 appeal.

Established over twenty years ago, the Light up a Life Appeal has now raised well in excess of £1 million towards the work of George Thomas Hospice Care, helping to maintain services such as the provision of specialist home-based nursing care and medical equipment for patients, as well as medical advice, pain, fatigue and anxiety management, pre and post bereavement counselling and spiritual support through extremely difficult times.

Speaking about the latest appeal, Capitol Shopping Centre manager, Jeff Wilson said he was delighted to have been able to support such a worthy cause:
“The Light up a Life Appeal is a very established and worthy fundraising event and we were delighted to be able to lend our support by giving a home to the Light up a Life tree this time around.
“It became a real focal point across the Christmas period and our shoppers were extremely generous in their support. A fantastic amount has been raised and we’d like to wish George Thomas Hospice Care all the very best with future fundraising activity, in which I’m sure the Capitol Centre will play a part.”
Chief Executive of George Thomas Hospice Care, Margaret Pritchard added:
“Fundraising is so important to us as it allows us to continue our vital work as a charity and to witness such support – particularly through these tough economic times – is very uplifting.
“We’re clearly delighted with the total raised and would like to thank both the Capitol Shopping Centre and all those who kindly donated to the appeal for their efforts.”
