Hope for BBC regional site

By Andy Pearson

I do hope the latest batch of BBC cuts doesn’t have a negative effect on the corporation’s window on south west Wales.

It provides a lively, colourful overview of the region – a young but valuable element of the local media scene.

Local newspapers and radio stations get to the community grassroots better than the website does but the stamp of the Beeb does help give an added sheen of gravitas to our key local issues.

For example, as well as the regional news, there has been much to enjoy in the website’s features section this week.

Swansea actress Cara Readle, aged 19, tells how the theme of troubled teenage years is following her thought her big TV roles just now.

Drama

She’s now in BBC Wales three-part drama series, Baker Boys.

A link to weatherman Derek Brockway’s walking series takes us to his trek along a substantial part of the Gower coast, featuring applause for locations such as Caswell Bay, Pwll Du and the Bishopston Valley.

And there’s an informative recap on the decision by Swansea-raised MP Nigel Evans to come out.

That’s a fine mix of reading material by anyone’s standards, so here’s to a lot more of it!
