Dylan back in the Swansea media

By Andy Pearson

The spirit of Dylan Thomas lives on in the eyes of the Swansea media.

Despite the great man being gone the best part of six decades you can’t keep him down.

His latest splurge arrives in the new edition of Swansea Life, a glossy yet to be dreamt of when the poet worked as a young reporter for the then South Wales Daily Post in the early 1930s.

A four-page feature focuses on some of the remaining city locations which we know were familiar to Thomas.

Unfortunately, it’s a rather ragtag and bobtail selection, with the “new” Kardomah cafe being a place Thomas never saw, The Antelope carrying an ominous To Let sign, The Mermaid being completely rebuilt and the Number Ten now housing Holland & Barrett.

There’s no mention for some gems which still have some similarity in appearance to the places Thomas knew – among them his first school in Mirador Crescent, Uplands, the nearby church hall in which he broadcast on the Beeb.

Nonetheless, it’s a lovely glimpse into the past and in PR terms reveals that any business with a location vaguely linked to Thomas should make the most of it.

Read the biographies, read his poetry for clues … and start talking up your link with literary genius.

Who knows, you might find yourself in the next Dylan newspaper feature.
