Full steam ahead for social media
By Andy Pearson
Big word, electrification.
And it was a big issue for Wales yesterday. So how did you catch the news?
The BBC Radio News bulletin at 5.30pm? ITV Wales’ evening news show a little later … or this morning’s Western Mail?
With media statements and briefings to write quickly for PR clients, my own choice of news provider was that all-things-to-all-people service Twitter.
I estimate that the first tweet mentioning the confirmed plans for London-Cardiff rail electrification came 28 minutes before it was broadcast on a traditional media channel.
As the evening progressed there was a huge reaction to the news, ranging from delight (those east of Bridgend) to dismay (west of Cardiff).
There were also a great number of signposts to online articles which went into some depth on the issue.
One thing’s for certain – unlike the train services in and out of Swansea, Twitter’s not a child of the steam age.
