Mary & Jeff back in print
By Andy Pearson
As a PR tool, it’s low-tech. It’s also very effective.
Focus on Killay is the frequent newsletter pushed through the letterboxes of the west Swansea wards covered by city councillor husband-and-wife team Mary and Jeff Jones.
It has the smell of a 1970s school Gestetner copier, it’s a single folded sheet of A4 and it’s limited to black, white and several shades of red.
Headlines in the latest edition - number 27 – include Forthcoming Bin Days, Dog Fouling and Grit Bins.
Subjects include a welcome for Killay’s new police inspector, a predicted start date for work on a revamped BMX track and daffodil damage due to cars on grass verges.
It’s news that can get overlooked in the hurly-burly of newspapers so I applaud our elected members on their efforts.
Yes, the exercise will have its PR benefits come election time but it’s also an established communications tool and helps, in its own small way, bind the community together at its grassroots.
A lot of commercial enterprises could learn a thing or two from our Mary and Jeff.
Keep on publishing, councillors!
