Cardiff speedway excitement mounts

By Andy Pearson

There’s nothing like the thought of a big sporting day out to raise the anticipation levels.

And that’s just how speedway fans are feeling about their annual big day out in Cardiff next month.

The 2011 world championship series rolls into the Millennium Stadium on June 25 and more than 40,000 fans are expected.

Capital

The FIM Speedway Grand Prix 2011 series is two heats old at present – Poland and Sweden – and hits Czech Republic capital Prague this weekend.

And already it’s shown itself to be a thrilling fixture on Europe’s conjested sporting calendar.

Sky TV show the high-power action live and newspapers in speedway hotspots such as Manchester, Norwich, Peterborough, Coventry and Poole love news from the stars.

Latest

The latest news comes from the winner of the recent Gothenburg GP.

Dorset-based Aussie Chris Holder has revealed that he’s been chilling out as the temperature builds.

Following glory in the FIM Meridian Lifts Swedish SGP on May 14, the 23-year-old Poole Pirates star took a few days away in Marbella.

Poolside

He went poolside in the Spanish resort with Poole and Team GB manager Neil Middleditch, Poole promoter Matt Ford and Pirates teammates Darcy Ward and Jason Doyle.

Coventry Bees’ Edward Kennett and Eastbourne Eagles’ Lewis Bridger joined them for some fun in the Andalusian sun.

Aussie hero Holder, who won last year’s FIM British Speedway Grand Prix at Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium ahead of Jason Crump and Jaroslaw Hampel, said: “Speedway’s an intense sport; riders regularly find themselves in high-pressure situations.

Important

“It’s important that we take a break when we can – and that’s why we headed off for four days at a friend’s villa in the Costa del Sol. It’s just a coincidence that it came after Gothenburg when I couldn’t have asked for a better night.

“It’s onto Prague now on May 28 and it should be a great night in the Marketa Stadium because the venue’s got great heritage and the crowd’s passionate.

“I know a lot of the boys are also looking ahead to Cardiff’s FIM Doodson British Speedway GP. There’ll be a massive crowd and the great buzz of the Millennium Stadium.”

Roll on, Cardiff!
