Hats off to the ‘Twizzler’
By Andy Pearson
Well, who would have thought it?
One of the royal wedding’s most hotly disputed fashion items has shown that there are still silver linings to be found within clouds.
The BBC reports today that bids on eBay for Princess Beatrice’s unusual hat has hit £18,400.
Twizzler
The Philip Treacy creation has been likened – not entirely flatteringly – to a Turkey Twizzler, a toilet seat and a pretzel.
So well done to Beatrice on achieving an increasing amount of credibility from the situation.
The auction ends in four days with proceeds going to Unicef and Children in Crisis.
Support
One bidder is quoted as saying: “We knew we had to bid. We’re ambassadors for Unicef and we think it’s great that Princess Beatrice has chosen to support children in great need.”
Clearly the decision to offload the item for charity wasn’t driven by a need for PR … but it’s certainly helped build the reputation of Beatrice.
The episode shows that difficult situations can often become opportunities for those who understand what the media enjoys.
Plaudits to all concerned. And you know what? I’m even coming round to admiring the hat for what it is, a little fun piece of fashion.
