New ‘Dylan Thomas’ for Swansea
By Effective Communication
Illness to a performer playing Dylan Thomas means a change for a Swansea live production.
City-based actor Adrian Metcalfe, who has played Dylan-related roles around the world, has stepped in to cover for the absent Chris Needs.
This Friday’s (May 27) recreation of the 1949 Swansea and the Arts BBC radio show will go ahead as planned at the city centre Tapestri café bar.
Karen Struel-White, of KSW Productions which is staging the performance, said: “We wish Chris a quick recovery and thank Adrian for stepping in at short notice.
“He’s a Dylan stalwart who knows the script already.”
One of Dylan Thomas’s most famous national radio broadcasts, the original programme featured the writer with poet Vernon Watkins, composer Daniel Jones, artist Alfred Janes and writer John Pritchard.
The new performance celebrates the homecoming of a painting which depicts the 1949 broadcast.
The Kardomah Boys, a 30in x 40in acrylic painting on canvas, is based on a Radio Times photograph which publicised the original programme.
It was created by Swansea’s Jeff Phillips and has been on a year-long tour of Dylan-related sites across South Wales.
Its permanent home will be Tapestri, run by social care and housing provider Grwp Gwalia.
The Kardomah Boys: Swansea and the Arts Tapestri café bar, Llys Glas, Alexandra Road, Swansea, 6pm, Friday May 27, free entry with donations going to the charity Cyrenians Cymru (performance 7.15pm, painting unveiled 8.30pm). Details: 01792 469787.
